At Triple i Human Capital, we believe that sustainable work engagement doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with insight – grounded in science, measured with care, and translated into meaningful feedback as a basis for effective dialogue in the organisation. We have been at the forefront of engagement-science as one of our founders, Prof. dr. Wilmar Schaufeli, developed an international scientific network that continues to deepen the insights in it to this date.
In this blog, we shed light on the scientific foundation of work engagement, the importance of validated questionnaires, and why offering individual feedback and participation is important for both employees and organizations.
Work engagement has been studied in occupational health psychology, and one of the best known ways to explain it is the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) Model. This model, developed over the past 25 years by one of our founders at Triple i, provides a dynamic framework to understand how working conditions influence employee energy and motivation.
The core idea is simple:
Job demands (like high workload or emotional strain) can lead to stress and exhaustion.
Job resources (like autonomy, feedback, or social support) foster motivation and engagement.
When job resources outweigh job demands, employees are more likely to experience vitality, dedication, and absorption — the three pillars of employee engagement.
To support employees effectively, we need to measure what matters, in the right way. That’s why we developed the Energy Compass, a validated, research-based instrument grounded in the JD-R model.
It was developed by prof. Schaufeli to uncover as many drivers of engagement as possible with as few questions as possible. Because of this, it is recognized to be a very practical survey that generates high response of employees. The Energy Compass is updated every year with new benchmarks and new concepts to make sure modern HR-issues are covered.
This way we ensure that what we measure reflects the actual drivers of engagement, stress, and performance. The Energy Compass focuses on the balance between job resources and job demands at work and does so in a reliable, evidence-based way.
Using validated measures like the Energy Compass allows us to:
Provide employees with insightful, trustworthy feedback about their work engagement.
Identify patterns within teams and across the organization that are truly actionable.
Avoid guesswork or assumptions that can lead to ineffective interventions.
Without a solid scientific foundation, measurement becomes a shot in the dark. With the Energy Compass, we bring clarity, structure, and direction to conversations about mental wellbeing and sustainable performance.

However, measurement alone is not enough. That’s why we always link our assessments to individual feedback. Employees receive a personalized energy report, helping them:
Reflect on what gives and drains their energy.
See how their work context aligns with key psychological needs.
Start conversations with their team or manager based on insight.
This bottom-up approach empowers individuals, supports ownership, and lays the groundwork for meaningful team development.
Engagement thrives when people understand their own work experience and feel supported in improving it. The JD-R model offers a solid scientific compass, using validated questionnaires to ensure we measure the right things, and personal feedback brings the data to life as it serves as a basis for meaningful and effective dialogue.
At Triple i Human Capital, we see work engagement not as a buzzword, but as a shared responsibility that begins with insight, conversation, and action.
